Description
The sandblasted artwork by artist Eugene Kara initially lacked the contrast needed to make its bold visual statement, and ECOTONE was engaged to resolve the challenge while preserving the concrete's natural texture.
ECOTONE applied a customised colour wash to the concrete matrix, enhancing the contrast between the artwork and its surrounds while leaving the aggregate stones exposed. This careful, considered technique ensured the design remained clearly defined and visually impactful without losing the raw, authentic character of the material.
Kara's design draws inspiration from Maori patterns, particularly poutama, which he describes as representing one's journey through life and one's journey towards attaining knowledge. The result is a visually striking, culturally rich piece that balances modern colour work with traditional Maori influences.
