The sandblasted artwork initially lacked the desired contrast to make the beautiful and bold visual statement. ECOTONE’S solution involved applying a customized ECOTONE Matt wash to the matrix, enhancing the contrast while leaving the aggregate stones exposed. This technique preserved the raw, natural texture of the concrete, while ensuring the artwork was clearly defined and visually impactful

Through careful collaboration, ECOTONE NZ was able to resolve a key challenge—ensuring the artwork by Eugene Kara stood out while maintaining the integrity and natural beauty of the concrete. Kara’s design draws inspiration from Māori patterns, particularly poutama, which he described as representing “one’s journey through life and one’s journey towards attaining knowledge.”  This approach not only highlighted the intricate artwork but also preserved the authentic, raw texture of the concrete. The result is a visually striking, culturally rich design that balances modern aesthetics with traditional Māori influences, showcasing Ecotone’s creative expertise.
